Monday forecast for Austin: Bundle up, folks — winter temperatures have arrived a day before the meteorological start of the season in December.

Temperatures at Camp Mabry, Austin’s main weather station, were only 38 degrees as of 7 a.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

Despite bright, cloudless skies full of sunshine, daytime temperatures are expected to stay below 55 degrees — which is more than 10 degrees below normal for Austin at this time of year. North-northwest winds of 5 to 15 mph, especially with gusts as strong as 20 mph, could make outside feel even colder, forecasters say.

Skies will remain mostly clear at night, allowing temperatures to sink to below freezing before landing at around 25 degrees — which also would be about 20 degrees (!) colder than normal. The coldest recorded low on Nov. 30 in Austin was only 5 degrees cooler — and that was more than a hundred years ago in 1911.

The weather service already expects a light freeze in parts of the Hill Country early Monday.

“Late tonight, a widespread freeze is expected over South Central Texas, which will be the first freeze of the fall season for most of the area,” the weather service said in a bulletin Monday morning. “No other hazardous weather is expected at this time.”

Forecasters also said the freeze would continue Tuesday morning throughout the region, but temperatures would climb to above freezing by mid-morning.

In Austin, Tuesday should be sunny with a high near 61, as southerly winds kick up. Tuesday night should be partly cloudy with a low around 42.

The weather service’s extended outlook includes a slight chance of rain, but mainly wintry, chilly air:

Wednesday: A 30 percent chance of showers with a high near 60. Cold front arrives in the afternoon with winds gusting as high as 20 mph. Mostly clear at night with a low around 37.

Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 54. North wind 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. At night, partly cloudy with a low around 34.

Friday: Mostly sunny with a high near 56. Mostly clear at night with a low around 34.

Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 61. Partly cloudy at night with a low around 39.
