Austin-Travis County health officials on Tuesday said four more people have died from COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.

As of Tuesday, a total of 399 people in the area have died from coronavirus-related complications, officials said.

Health officials on Tuesday also said 86 more people in the county had tested positive for the coronavirus, bringing the total to 27,124.

Officials estimate that 25,980 people have recovered from COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic.

Fourteen new patients with coronavirus were hospitalized, according to Austin-Travis county health officials.

Local health officials on Tuesday reported that 122 people are in Austin-area hospitals with COVID-19. Of those, 42 are in intensive care and 26 are on ventilators.

The weekly average positivity rate, the ratio of positive coronavirus tests compared to the total number of tests given, was 4.6% on Tuesday compared to 6.2% last week.

Travis County health officials have said concerns remain about the disproportionate effect the virus is having on the Hispanic community as well as people living in nursing homes.

Austin Public Health officials on Tuesday said communities of color are still being hospitalized with COVID-19 in disproportionate rates, though the rate of coronavirus patients who identify as Hispanic has decreased.

Interim Health Authority Dr. Mark Escott on Tuesday told Travis County commissioners that 12.5% of the patients hospitalized last week with COVID-19 are Black, the highest that statistic has been since April 20.

Data released Tuesday included a breakdown of the Travis County cases by race and ethnicity.

Of those who tested positive for the coronavirus, 50% are Hispanic, according to recent Austin data. Non-Hispanic whites account for about 31% of cases, 7% are Black and 3% are Asian.

In some cases, the race or ethnicity of Travis County residents with the coronavirus is listed as “unknown” or “other.”
