A Travis County Jail inmate died in his cell late Wednesday but a cause of death has not yet been determined, authorities said.

The inmate, 44-year-old Rene Martinez, had been booked into the jail on Tuesday, charged with possession of a controlled substance, said the Travis County sheriff’s office, which runs the jail.

At 10:20 p.m. Wednesday, a corrections officer making a scheduled check of the inmates in their cells found Martinez unresponsive, the sheriff’s office said.

“A post visual report less than 30 minutes earlier indicated nothing out of the ordinary,” authorities said.

Jail personnel tried to revive Martinez with CPR until Austin-Travis County EMS medics took over resuscitation efforts, but Martinez was pronounced dead at 11:49 p.m.

As is standard protocol in jail deaths, an internal and criminal investigation by the sheriff’s office, as well as by Texas Rangers and the Travis County medical examiner’s office is underway.
