Travis County sheriff’s deputy Robert “Drew” Small died late Friday night when his motorcycle collided with another vehicle in Milam County, according to the sheriff’s office.

Small, 48, was off duty at the time and returning home from Louisiana, the sheriff’s office said Saturday. The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the collision.

Small had been with the Travis County sheriff’s office since December 1995. He worked in dispatch and as a corrections officer before becoming a deputy in 2006, working night shift patrol in western Travis County for more than a decade before moving to the motors unit in December 2018, according to the sheriff’s office.

Small’s employee file “is stacked with letters of appreciation and commendation from the community. He recently received a Unit Citation for his work with the Special Response Team,” the department said.

Small was the second Travis County deputy killed this year in a traffic-related fatality.

Senior deputy Christopher Korzilius, 32, died March 18 driving an unmarked unit on his way to work at 6:50 am. He was struck head-on by another vehicle that had veered into his lane in the 7700 block of RM 2244, near One World Theatre, west of Loop 360 (Capital of Texas Highway) near Weston Lane.

Korzilius’ vehicle overturned, pinning him inside. He died at the scene.

The eighth Travis County deputy to be killed in the line of duty, Korzilius joined the sheriff’s office in June 2016 and joined the VICE unit in January, primarily working nights in eastern Travis County. He earned the Commendation Bar after responding to a shooting in July 2018, the sheriff’s office said.
