Those who have tickets to fly Southwest Airlines between Austin and Chicago may have their flights canceled after at least one control tower operator tested positive for COVID-19, the illness linked to the new coronavirus, airline officials said Friday.

Bryce Dubee, a spokesman for Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, confirmed that flights between Austin and Chicago’s Midway Airport were canceled Friday.

A large portion of Southwest Airlines’ flights were canceled at its Chicago hub after the airport’s control tower was shut down amid a COVID-19 outbreak, several Chicago media outlets reported Friday.

“If travelers have concerns about future scheduled travel with any airlines, we recommend they consult the airlines directly,” Dubee said.

The new coronavirus pandemic has caused countless international and domestic flights to be canceled or scaled back after travel restrictions were set in place globally to help stop the spread of the virus.

Many airlines have allowed customers to reschedule flights until after the pandemic is over.

Dubee said Austin-Bergstrom International Airport remains open. However, low travel demand has forced airlines to significantly scale back flight frequency, he said.
