A school teacher and community activist is the second person to announce her candidacy for Round Rock City Council Place 1.

In a Friday news release, Tina Steiner said she “cannot wait to give back to the community that has given me everything I have today.”

Steiner is a member of the Sauls family, which was named a 2019 Local Legend by the Round Rock Historic Preservation Commission.

Steiner teaches at the Round Rock Opportunity Center, the school district‘s alternative education campus. She serves on several boards including the Historic Preservation Commission and the Round Rock Infrastructure Council, and previously served on the Round Rock Housing Authority Commission.

Steiner‘s announcement comes after downtown Round Rock bar owner Michelle Ly filed in mid-January to run for council Place 1. In her announcement, Ly said she is vying for a council seat to give back to the “community where I live and work.”

Both are running to serve the seat currently held by Tammy Young, who is running in the U.S. Congressional District 13 Democratic primary race.

The filing period for City Council candidates continues through Feb. 14. Mayor Craig Morgan and Place 4 Council Member Will Peckham, who have both announced they are seeking another term, have no opponents as of Friday.
