A handful of Capital Metro bus riders Wednesday were surprised with a year’s worth of free shuttle services in celebration of the agency reaching a billion rides over its 35-year history.

Cap Metro’s bus on Route 333 in South Austin was randomly selected for the prize and each of the 10 customers aboard received year-long passes to ride the bus for free.

Randy Clarke, president and CEO of Capital Metro; state Sen. Kirk Watson, D-Austin; Austin City Council Member and Mayor Pro Tem Delia Garza; and Travis County Commissioner Jeff Travillion personally handed out the free passes while aboard the bus Wednesday.

Since beginning in 1985, Cap Metro has grown from 225 buses to more than 540, according to the transit agency. In 2019, the agency provided more than 31 million rides compared to just 8 million during its first year.
