Westlake High School history teacher Cathy Cluck will soon be able to extend her traveling adventures, but this time by air.

Southwest Airlines on Friday awarded Cluck 40,000 rapid rewards bonus points to fly anywhere she would like. Eanes school officials surprised Cluck in her classroom Friday morning with signs, flowers and balloons.

“After your road trip, Southwest Airlines noticed you and thought the world of you,” said principal Steve Ramsey, who presented the award on behalf of Southwest Airlines.

In August, when the school year began remotely, Cluck decided she was going to put a real connection to her history lessons by visiting historical sites.

Embarking on a 1,500-mile American history road trip, Cluck made 11 stops in the two-week trip, visiting famous historical sites such as the Gettysburg battlefield; the Weehawken, N.J., dueling grounds of Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr; the Lincoln Memorial in Washington; and Jamestown, Va., the first successful English settlement in North America.

Cluck has been back in the classroom since September, after the district reopened its campuses to students for the first time since March.

She was not immediately available for comment.
