The big largemouth bass are showing up on Lake Travis as the spring shallow water bonanza arrives.

Having to hold my landing net for several minutes while a client battles a huge bass on light spinning tackle always gives me a thrill. Billy Bragan of Houston recently did a great job of wearing the bass down with a medium action spinning rod and 8 pound test line.

The super fat 7-pound largemouth was full of ripe eggs, and we carefully released her after getting a good photo.

Billy duped this lunker on a four inch green pumpkin Senko stick worm. Using small plastics has always produced good numbers of large fish in the super clear water of Lake Travis. Old bass are more easily fooled using finesse tactics on our unique lake.

The rainy afternoon Saturday produced another 7-pound largemouth for longtime friend Colton Etheridge of Lakeway. Etheridge sent me a photo text and then informed me of his unique technique.

Etheridge was trying to escape the stress of serious bass fishing by using a borrowed Zebco spin cast rig and live minnows.to target some crappie under a boat dock.

Crappie were uncooperative, but he hooked into a jumbo fish that took a long time to subdue on light line.

The long 24-inch bass was fairly skinny and spawned out. The girth of a bass determines its weight more than length. Full of eggs, Etheridge’s bass would have weighed well over 8 pounds.

The heat returns this coming week and the fishing will heat up also. Keep your line fresh and your hooks sharp.
