A pedestrian who died after walking in the path of oncoming traffic in Southeast Austin earlier this month has been identified as 55-year-old Juan Palacios, Austin police said Thursday.

Officers were called to the 4700 block of Burleson Road at around 10:50 p.m. on Jan. 18 after reports of a collision, Austin police said in a statement. A preliminary police investigation determined that Palacios and another pedestrian walked onto Burleson Road and into the path of a Ford F-150.

Palacios was struck by the truck and was taken to St. David’s South Austin Medical Center, where he died on Jan. 26, police said.

Authorities said the area where Palacios and his companion were crossing was dark and had no nearby crosswalks.

Police said no charges are expected to be filed in the incident, which resulted in the city’s eighth traffic death of 2020.
