Austin police have identified a driver killed in a Feb. 1 crash in Southeast Austin as 24-year-old Jaymes Anthony Torres.

Torres was driving a green Toyota Avalon on Feb. 1, heading west in the 5700 block of East Stassney Lane, near Nuckols Crossing Road, just before 7:40 p.m., police said.

According to a preliminary police investigation, Torres appears to have lost control of the sedan and crashed into a group of trees on the south curb line.

Police said they don‘t know why he left the roadway, adding that they didn’t know if driver impairment or speeding contributed to the crash.

“It does not appear that weather or road conditions were factors,” police said in a statement Monday.

Torres was taken to St. David’s South Austin Medical Center, where he died Feb. 4 from his injuries.

The invesstigation is ongoing and police are asking anyone with more information about the case to call detectives at 512-974-4278. Tips also can be submitted through the Austin police mobile app, Austin PD, a free download for iPhone and Android devices.

Police said Torres was the 12th person to die in Austin traffic so far this year. At this time in 2019, police reported only five traffic deaths.
