Man who crashed into barrier in South Austin on Tuesday dies at hospital – News – Austin American-Statesman

A 33-year-old man died after a single-vehicle crash Tuesday in South Austin, Austin police said.

Officers were called to the intersection of the westbound Ben White frontage road and South Congress Avenue at 4:44 a.m. Tuesday after receiving reports of a crash, according to police.

Investigators say Matthew John Smith was driving on the service road in his Ford F-150 and nearing Congress Avenue when he tried to make a U-turn.

Officers said Smith lost control of the truck and smashed into a cement barrier. The vehicle then caught on fire, according to police.

Smith was taken from the vehicle and brought to Dell Seton Medical Center where he later died from his injuries.

This is Austin’s 83rd fatal crash of 2019, police said.
