Teeming bluebonnets are a beautiful sight for bass anglers. The state flower never lies and always guarantees that the shallow water action has arrived.

The super clear water of Lake Travis really adds an exciting visual element. Right now you can see big numbers of cruising bass inside the coves.

Of course, if you get too close these bass will see you and are very difficult to catch. The key is to make long casts and draw reflex strikes before they spook.

The slow natural fall of unweighted soft plastic lures has been the best producer this past week. The Senko and Slug-Go are producing best in three colors: pearl shad, green pumpkin and watermelon.

At times a bright gaudy color like hot pink or bubblegum will goad bass into attacking. Tony DiCello of Lakeway gave my landing net a thrill by fooling a 4-pound largemouth on a neon pink Senko.

The surface temperature has ranged from 59 to 64 degrees. A few fish are even falling for surface lures.

We are just entering the best time of year for slow reeling small grubs and swimbaits. My biggest producer for 40 years has been a 3-inch smoke glitter curly tail grub.

Rig it on a 1/8 ounce jighead and cover lots of water swimming it out from shorelines. The number of strikes per hour can be amazing.

This small lure has produced good numbers of large bass in the 4-9-pound class over the past springs in addition to tons of average size bass.

Another grub bonus is its appeal to other species like white bass, crappie, and stripers.
