Michael Egwuagu, the former University of Texas at San Antonio football player accused of murdering his sister Friday, can be heard confessing to the crime in a video recording that captured the moments immediately following Jennifer Ebichi’s death, according to police.

“I killed Jennifer,” Egwuagu, 25, can be heard saying in footage captured by a doorbell camera as he left Ebichi’s home outside Pflugerville, according to an affidavit for his arrest made available Sunday.

Egwuagu was arrested and charged with murder Friday night.

Ebichi, 32, was in her first trimester of pregnancy, according to the affidavit, citing an autopsy.

Martin Egwuagu, Michael Egwuagu’s older brother and Ebichi’s twin, told police that he received a text message from Jennifer around 5:30 a.m. Friday stating that Michael Egwuagu “was at the residence and was having a crisis.” Martin Egwuagu then spoke with his brother on the phone in an attempt to calm him down when he heard Michael Egwuagu make several strange statements, police said.

Then around 4:10 p.m., Martin Egwuagu received another text from his sister asking him to come to the house, in the 16000 block of Vescovo Lane. According to the affidavit, when he arrived, he saw a woman he recognized as a member of the church he attends standing on the front lawn with Ebichi’s oldest child covered in blood.

Martin Egwuagu then went inside of the residence, where he found Ebichi lying on the kitchen floor in a large pool of blood with one dozen to two dozen stab wounds. He also heard Ebichi’s youngest child crying, quickly grabbed the child and took her out of the house, according to the affidavit

Outside, Martin Egwuagu found Michael Egwuagu in the street kneeling down as though praying, he told police. When he walked up to him, Michael Egwuagu told him that he was “one of the good ones.”

Blood covered Michael Egwuagu’s clothing, and he then got up, removed his bloody clothes and placed them in a trash can along the curb, according to the affidavit.

After police arrived and took Egwuagu into custody, investigators questioned the woman standing on the lawn. She told police that Ebichi also had contacted her and asked her to come to her house. When the woman arrived, she heard Ebichi, her children and Egwuagu screaming and yelling inside the house, according to the affidavit.

Soon after she saw Egwuagu exit the home smiling and holding a bloody kitchen knife when he told her, “I killed Jennifer,” then walked into the street and knelt, police said.

Michael Egwuagu was being held in the Travis County Jail as of Sunday, according to jail logs. His bail has been set at $500,000.

He played safety at UTSA between 2013 and 2016, according to the university’s website. He previously played football for Connally High School in the Pflugerville school district.
