Wednesday forecast for Austin: Austin residents could see strong to severe weather Wednesday evening accompanied by the chance of hail and an isolated tornado, according to meteorologist.

The National Weather Service forecast calls for a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 4 p.m., with southwest winds blowing 5 to 10 mph.

Meteorologists Wednesday said there will also be a chance for severe weather across portions of the Hill Country and Central Texas, including Austin.

“The severe threat late this afternoon and evening is conditional on the atmosphere being able to produce storms,“ meteorologists said in a statement Wednesday. ”In other words, should storms form, conditions are favorable for them to become severe.“

If severe storms do occur, meteorologists said there will also be chances for 1 inch hail, a few damaging winds and an isolated tornado.

The morning and afternoon, before the chance of severe weather begins, will bring partly sunny skies with a night near 91, according to the forecast.

The evening will be partly cloudy with a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms starting up again before 10 p.m., meteorologists said. Those storms could also be severe, according to the forecast.

The overnight low is expected to be around 70 degrees, the forecast said.

Gov. Greg Abbott early Wednesday said he’s placed multiple emergency services across the state on standby in anticipation of severe weather in Central Texas.

The Texas Division of Emergency Management will gather Texas A&M Forest Service saw crews, Texas Parks and Wildlife water rescue boats, the Texas Department of State Health Services ambulance strike team and more.

“As severe weather approaches, the Lone Star State is taking necessary precautions to ensure the safety of Texans,” Abbott said in a statement Wednesday. “I urge all Texans to heed the guidance of local officials and pay attention to weather alerts to keep themselves and their loved ones informed and safe.”
