The city of Austin and Travis County will issue orders for all residents to “shelter in place” on Tuesday to prevent new cases of COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus. While the draft of the orders was not provided publicly, Mayor Steve Adler said Monday it resembles a shelter-in-place directive issued Sunday in Dallas County.
Here’s what those orders call for:
• All residents are required to shelter at their home. Homes include hotels, motels, shared homes and other living spaces.
• People may only leave their homes for essential activities, such as grocery shopping, pharmacy visits or medical appointments. Exceptions for travel include picking up or delivering essential supplies such as food or medication or laundry.
• Exercise and pet walking is permitted as long as social distancing guidelines are followed.
• All businesses are closed unless considered an essential business including: grocery stores, gas stations, pharmacies, restaurants providing drive-thru, take out or curbside food service, hardware stores, pet supplies stores, laundry service, liquor stores, food cultivation and warehouse stores.
• Work travel exceptions include leaving homes to work at essential businesses and to perform essential government functions.
• People who work for non-essential businesses may continue to work from home.
• All public or private gatherings outside of a home are banned, including religious services. Church services can be broadcast, but no more than 10 people can be at a place of worship to provide those services.
• All elective medical, surgical and dental procedures are prohibited.
