Austin public health officials are calling on event organizers to “strongly consider” canceling or postponing events with more than 250 people.

In a statement Friday night, Austin Public Health also strongly recommended that venues hosting events frequently sanitize surfaces that are often touched, encourage attendees to keep a distance of at least six feet apart from each other and keep adequate supply of hygiene products.

The city’s request for cancellations is voluntary, the statement says. Stronger recommendations are under consideration.

The request is the latest measure the city of Austin has taken to help prevent the spread of the new coronavirus in the area. Three people have tested positive in the city, health officials said Friday.

Austin Public Health also announced new emergency rules for restaurants and food establishments.

Under the new rules, food permit holders and people in charge of food are ordered to display “Help Prevent Disease” signs provided by the city, make hand sanitizer available to clients and the general public, disinfect and sanitize commonly touched surfaces in the establishment at lease every hour, and remove food handlers from duties if they develop a fever of 100.4 degrees or higher during their shifts.

Violators may lose their food establishment permits, the statement said.

The rules will be in place until July 12.
