Comal County next week will open a one-day drive-thru site to provide free coronavirus tests to anyone who makes an appointment.

The site, which will test between 50 and 60 people, will be set up by state emergency management and health officials with the Comal school district and the county at Canyon High School, 1510 Interstate 35 in New Braunfels, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 30.

To make an appointment, call 512-883-2400 or visit txcovidtest.org beginning Tuesday morning to register and receive an appointment time. Registrations will not be accepted until 48 hours before it opens, health officials said.

Before receiving an appointment, residents will be screened for the following symptoms: fever and/or chills; cough, dry or productive; fatigue; body aches or muscle or joint pain; shortness of breath; sore throat; headache; nausea, vomiting or diarrhea; nasal congestion; or loss of taste or smell.

“We’re pleased to partner with the state and Comal ISD to make this opportunity available for residents who might not otherwise have access to a doctor or be able to afford a test,” County Judge Sherman Krause said in a statement Friday. “This will be an important step toward increasing our testing capacity and better understanding the spread of the coronavirus in our community.”

As many as 35 people have recovered from COVID-19, the disease linked to the coronavirus, according to Comal County health officials on Friday.

As of Friday morning, 674 COVID-19 tests had been conducted in the county with 21 results still pending.

Among the 48 positive tests, six people have died in the county.

Seven cases remain active among county residents: Two of them are in a hospital and the rest self-isolating at home.

More information about COVID-19 is available at comalcountytx.com/covid19.

If you have questions or concerns about the coronavirus, call the county’s dedicated COVID-19 hotline, 830-221-1120, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
