Colin Powell once said a vision doesn’t become reality by chance. It takes passion, determination, hard work, planning (aka a lot of meetings) and a few sparks of genius. All of that stands true when it comes to the Williamson County Fair.

There has long been chatter about creating a county fair. Having a facility to house the fair was a major obstacle. But with the construction of the new County Expo Center in Taylor, we realized we had the perfect place to turn the dream of many into reality.

There’s a certain feel to a county fair that simply doesn’t exist anywhere else. The sights, sounds and smell of everything under the sun battered and deep fried will bring you right back to those much simpler carefree days of your youth.

That’s exactly what the inaugural Williamson County Fair and Rodeo aims to do Oct. 22-24. This will be an opportunity to start new family traditions just a quick drive from home.

The three-day event kicks off with the “Patriot Mustang Show.” Through a partnership with the Mustang Heritage Foundation, this will be the first time a veteran and a professional equine expert have been paired together to train a wild mustang.

From start to finish, the fair will be offering fun and entertainment, with a little something for everybody. Whether it’s local arts and craft, high-flying fun at the carnival, pig races, a petting zoo, a wine garden, victory on the midway or the cornucopia of fair eats that you’re after, we’ve got you covered.

Can you even consider yourself a “real” county fair in Texas if you didn’t have a rodeo? No worries, because we’ll have two full nights of some of the best heart-pounding bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping and bull riding you’ll see in the area. And because it’s a family affair, we also have mutton busting and a calf scramble for the littlest Wilco cowboys.

Food, rodeo and rides oh my! But wait, there’s more.

There will be free live entertainment on our community stage all three days of the fair. To close out the festivities, we will have Texas native — and one of Country’s hottest male performers — hitting the stage.

Multi-platinum recording artist Tracy Byrd has cemented himself as a traditional country troubadour with songs like “Keeper of the Stars,” “Watermelon Crawl” and “Ten Rounds with Jose Cuervo.” He’ll be hitting the stage after Saturday’s rodeo.

Among all the food, fun and festivities that a county fair provides, it’s also our goal to celebrate what makes Williamson County so special. Our hope is that this fair highlights past and future generations of agriculturalists in the county, as well as educate others on the important role agricultural is and what we can do to help preserve it in our area.

In Williamson County we pride ourselves on being rich in the traditions of agriculture, family and faith. We hope that the County Fair and Rodeo is just another one of those family traditions that you look forward to for many, many years to come.

Russ Boles is commissioner of Williamson County Precinct 4, which includes Hutto, Taylor and the eastern portion of Round Rock.
