The Austin school district on Thursday evening announced it would be canceling large gatherings through April 3 to minimize potential spread of the new coronavirus.
The cancellation applies to student assemblies, field trips, field days, spring break camps and renting its buildings to outside entities. Sporting events will be considered on a case-by-case basis, Austin school officials said.
The cancellation is “an effort to implement social distancing when possible and support sanitary practices in our buildings,” the school district said in a statement.
The Austin school district is not closing any schools or ceasing district operations at this time, officials said. However, a school may close if a staff member or student has a confirmed case of COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus.
“Final determinations will be made on a case-by-case basis and in consultation with local health authorities,” the statement says.
