Austin police have identified a man who experienced a medical emergency after officers used a stun gun on him and later died as 41-year-old Enrique Quiroz.

Officers were dispatched at 4 p.m. on March 31 to a house in the 800 block of West Slaughter Lane in South Austin. A caller had reported that her children’s father was acting strangely and refused to leave, Austin police said.

The man, now identified as Quiroz, had been issued a criminal trespass notice on March 6, which prohibited him from returning to the property for one year and subjected him to arrest if he did so, officials said.

When police arrived, Quiroz fought two officers who were trying to take him into custody for violating the trespass order. The officers eventually used a stun gun on him, police said.

Once in handcuffs, Quiroz experienced a medical emergency, officials said. Austin-Travis County EMS medics, who were already at the scene, attempted life-saving measures, but Quiroz died at a hospital a short time later.

The two officers involved have been placed on administrative duty, which is standard protocol for all in-custody deaths, officials said.

Austin police on Wednesday said the names of the two officers will be released “in the near future.”

One officer has been with the Police Department for two years, and the other has been there for four years, according to officials.
