It took 94 years but Austin broke its daily heat record Sunday with a high of 99, three degrees higher than the previous record set in 1926 at Camp Mabry.

The daily heat record was also outshined Sunday at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport with a high of 96. The previous record — 95 — was set in 2016, when three of the top 10 songs on Billboard’s Hot 100 list that day included “Closer” by the Chainsmokers, “Cheap Thrills” by Sia and “This is What you Came for” by Rihanna.

“We had an area of high pressure, and with the circulation around Hurricane Delta’s landfall, it brought in northern winds and dryer air,” National Weather Service meteorologist Monte Oaks said. “Dew points were relatively low compared to what you normally have, which helps make the high pressure more efficient and generating heat.”

A mild and dry cold front is expected to roll through Austin late Monday morning, which should temper the weather on Columbus Day though still a few degrees above normal.

Monday’s high is expected to reach 90 with a low of 61.

Tuesday will be mostly sunny with a high near 88 and a low around 63.

Wednesday will also be mostly sunny with a high near 92 and a low around 67.
