Residents at Belmont Village Senior Living in Lakeway will exhibit their artwork at the Lake Travis Community Library’s rotating exhibit in February. The exhibit will display 21 pieces that showcase a wide range of styles, from portraits to abstract expressions. An opening reception will be held Friday, 2-3 p.m. Visitors may purchase their favorite pieces, available for pickup in early March. Proceeds will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association Capital of Texas Chapter to help fund research and the programs and resources that the chapter provides for Austin-area families.

The library features a new artist each month and exhibits are free and open to the public. The Belmont Village residents will be the first group of seniors to exhibit as a community at the library. The residents, many of whom are living with memory loss or cognitive changes themselves, have been working on their paintings and mixed media collages since September 2019 with local artist and art teacher Lynn Zwern. The artwork covers a variety of topics and subjects.

One of the most notable paintings to be displayed and available in a silent auction is a collaborative piece between residents and staff. Belmont Village Enrichment Leader Liz Walker gave form to the project by outlining a large canvas with a whimsical sunrise scene. Over the course of several weeks, residents stopped by to add a few brush strokes and their own mix of colors until the piece was complete.

Beginning this month, Lake Travis Community Library will again host the Great Decisions discussion program. Great Decisions is a nationwide, non-partisan program sponsored by the Foreign Policy Association intended to broaden public involvement in foreign affairs. The association chooses eight timely topics each year and publishes a briefing book and short documentary on those topics, which serve as focal points for discussion groups across the country. The program model involves reading the Great Decisions Briefing Book, which is available to borrow from the library or to purchase at www.fpa.org, watching a topical video, and meeting to discuss the most critical global issues facing the country.

Great Decisions will meet at the Lake Travis Community Library on Thursdays at 7 p.m. through March 26. The first meeting was Feb. 6. Each meeting will begin with a short documentary and then move into an open discussion facilitated by an expert on the topic. The remaining topics are:

Thursday – India and Pakistan

Feb. 20 – Red Sea Security

Feb. 27 – Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking

March 5 – U.S. Relations with the Northern Triangle

March 12 – China’s Road into Latin America

March 19 – The Philippines and the U.S.

March 26 – Artificial Intelligence and Data

The program is free, and no registration is required. Light refreshments will be provided. For additional information, go to www.fpa.org or laketravislibrary.org.
