A man died after a crash in a street race Wednesday night in Southeast Austin, police said.

The crash happened just after 11 p.m. on Bluff Springs Road, about a mile south of East William Cannon Drive. The driver of a white Chevy truck and a red Infiniti sedan were racing on Bluff Springs Road that night when the driver of the truck struck the car, Austin police said Thursday.

When police arrived, the red Infiniti was the only vehicle at the scene, said Officer Destiny Silva, a police spokeswoman. Medics took the driver to the hospital, where he later died.

Police did not identify the victim Thursday. He is estimated to have been in his 20s, according to Austin-Travis County EMS medics.

Jorge Lopez-Dominguez, the 20-year-old driver of the white Chevy truck, later returned to the scene while officers were still there, Silva said.

Lopez-Dominguez was arrested and booked into the Travis County Jail on charges of accident involving death and racing on a highway, records show.

“This racing incident had terrible consequences,” Silva said. “Someone lost their life. We want to remind the community to be alert, be safe. Don’t make reckless driving decisions that could possible injure you, your loved one, your passengers, or just nearby vehicles,“ Silva said.

Silva urged anyone who witnesses dangerous driving to call 911 and report it.
