Bee Cave police will have extra officers patrolling over the Memorial Day weekend in an anticipation of increased traffic volume, officials said.

With summer vacation on the horizon and stay-at-home orders easing, Police Chief Gary Miller said there will likely be an increase in traffic volume this weekend.

The increased enforcement is partly funded through a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation to pay for the overtime hours of officers working during this holiday period.

“We had suspended the (Selective Traffic Enforcement Program) patrols during the stay-at-home orders and the reduction in daily traffic, but the traffic volume is close to normal for this time of year, and we will restart STEP enforcement this weekend,” Miller said.

He said Memorial Day has historically seen large increases in vehicle traffic as families travel to visit friends or relatives and get an early start on summer vacation.

“Although Memorial Day is earlier this year than most, we expect people to be on the road, on the lake, and returning to restaurants, shops and stores,” he said. “We ask you to plan ahead, stay sober or call a cab or ride share service, don’t text and drive, watch your speed, and don’t forget social distancing and the rules in place to stop the spread of COVID-19.”
