A single nursing home has had a dozen patients die from COVID-19, the disease linked to the coronavirus, and nearly 200 nursing home residents across Travis County have tested positive for the virus, Austin officials said Tuesday.

As many as 26 patients have died from the virus at nursing homes and long-term care facilities in Travis County, while 192 residents have tested positive. One facility has had 12 of the 26 deaths, according to a slide presented to the Austin City Council.

Additionally, 88 staff members of such facilities have tested positive for the virus, including one, Maurice Dotson, who died.

Dr. Mark Escott, interim health authority for Austin and Travis County, did not identify the facility where 12 patients have died or name the operations where the clusters have occurred.

However, it is the same facility that officials said also has had a staff death.

Dotson worked at West Oaks Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in South Austin. The facility was one of the first to confirm in March that it had two patients who had tested positive for the virus, but it has since declined to say how many residents had COVID-19.

West Oaks officials did not immediately return a request for comment Tuesday morning.
