Last week’s osprey column generated a surprise phone call. Edward Polansky, a children’s book author from San Antonio, learned of my Lake Travis osprey that I named Oscar.

Edward is just completing a trilogy in his “Oscar the Osprey” series. We had a nice conversation comparing notes.

My Oscar has been very active recently as the shallow water fish feeding frenzy increases in the early mornings. The 67- to 69-degrees surface temperature marks the beginning of top-water action that peaks around the 78-degree level.

May has always been a prime bass fishing month on Lake Travis. Anglers have a lot of good options to fool the post-spawn foraging fish.

Any given morning can produce very good surface action on main lake structure like points, humps, bluffs and boat docks. My most recent solo scouting excursion produced a dozen nice largemouth in the first two hours of daylight.

A clear KVD Splash chugger did the trick using an erratic stop-and-go blurping cadence.

My fastest action, however, began after 9 a.m. using a popular worm fishing technique called shaky head jig worming.

The bass were mostly holding near the bottom in the 15- to 25-foot depth range. Sunny, calm conditions made me opt for a 1/8-ounce shaky head jig rigged with a Zoom Trick Worm.

This 6-inch floating worm has been popular for a few decades. My best colors are green pumpkin and morning dawn pink hue.

A slow twitching retrieve generates a serious response. The bass usually inhale it softly and then move slowly toward you. A smooth sweeping hook set will give a high hooking percentage.
