The Austin school district will close campuses indefinitely, Superintendent Paul Cruz announced Friday to teachers.
The details of the plan were not immediately clear Friday afternoon, when Cruz sent the email. Cruz assured teachers that the district would compensate them through the end of their contract or through the end of the school year.
The Austin district is the first major area district to make the call to close its campuses indefinitely. IDEA Public Schools, a charter operator with several Austin-area campuses, also made the decision this week.
“Life has changed for all of us,” Cruz wrote in the Friday email. “Education has changed. As we continue to experience changes on a daily basis, we are doing our best to plan, pivot and do our best by our students, families and staff. But we are also human and living in an unprecedented time, so we will make mistakes and ask for your patience, support and understanding.”
Thursday night, Superintendent Paul Cruz said the district was still weighing the decision in a virtual town hall meeting with State Rep. Eddie Rodriguez, D-Austin.
