A driver struck and injured a San Marcos police officer Monday afternoon while the officer was exiting his vehicle on Interstate 35, city officials said.

After Officer Paul Beller was struck, medics took him to a trauma facility, where he had surgery, officials said.

“We have no updates on his condition at this time, but our entire SMPD and city family hopes and prays for the best possible outcome,” Interim Police Chief Bob Klett said in a statement. “We stand ready to support him and his family through this difficult recovery.”

Beller was dispatched at 1:30 p.m. to the interstate because there was lumber in the road, officials said.

San Marcos officials did not immediately respond to questions about whether police had identified a suspect.

“Texas law compels drivers to reduce their speed to 20 miles below the posted limit or move into another lane when there is a law enforcement or first responder vehicle along the side of the road,” Klett said in the statement. “We want to do everything we can to keep our first responders and other drivers safe.”
