An Austin Chronicle employee has tested positive for COVID-19, the illness caused by the new coronavirus, the weekly newspaper said Wednesday.
The Austin Chronicle employee self-quarantined Saturday after experiencing symptoms, according to the Chronicle. Publisher Nick Barbaro said an email to staff that the employee’s test came back positive this week.
“An individual who has been in the Chronicle workplace within the past 14 days – we must assume pretty much everywhere in the office – tested positive this evening for the COVID-19 coronavirus,“ the email said.
Barbaro said the Chronicle office would shut down for at least 14 days while cleaning crews sanitize the work space.
In a separate email, Barbaro said the employee had no contact with newspapers sent to customers.
The employee is one of the 23 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Austin, according to the Chronicle.
