With a ceremonial first pitch by Mayor Craig Morgan, the Round Rock’s Adult Recreation Complex officially opened in Old Settlers Park on Friday.

The new home for Round Rock adult athletic events at 3443 Aten Loop features two adult softball fields, a restroom facility, parking lot, sports lighting, seats and shade.

“Hopefully we’ll get to expand that moving forward,” Morgan said at the celebration. “This is where we’ll host many of our adults sports events.”

The opening celebration with city leaders, league members and more than three dozen residents featured a ribbon cutting followed by a ceremonial softball scrimmage.

Morgan said the opening of the complex was among the exciting projects happening around the city, including the RM 620 roundabout project that broke ground Wednesday. He said the complex and improvements to RM 620 were “two of the projects that have taken the longest that people wanted the most.”

Morgan also took a moment to provide updates on the city’s response to COVID-19. He said the city is in close contact with state and regional partners and monitoring the situation daily.

“There will be some non-essential stuff getting canceled starting next week,” he said. “If you hear people talking, let them know we are on top of this and monitoring it every day.”

Parks Director Rick Atkins also unveiled a rock structure honoring Cath Martel, who is retiring after 35 years working in the Parks and Recreation Department.

The structure reads “Go Pokes!” in honor of the Oklahoma State Cowboys football team, one of Martel’s favorite teams. The opposite side of the structure reads “Fear the ’Stache” in honor of the Texas Tech Raiders, another favorite team of hers.

Atkins said they wanted Martel to have a lasting legacy in the park.

“She’s given a lot of blood, sweat and tears to this department,” he said. “We’ve grown as a city with her and because of her.”

The Adult Recreation Complex was funded through $4.775 million in bond funds Round Rock voters approved in 2014.
