Travis County has postponed all misdemeanor and felony jury trials and many other court settings through May 8 amid concerns over the spread of the new coronavirus.
The announcement came down Saturday morning from state District Judge Brenda Kennedy, the presiding judge over the county’s criminal courts. The policy complies with orders from Texas’ two highest courts, the Supreme Court and the Court of Criminal Appeals.
In addition to the postponement of jury trials, all defendants who are out of jail will not have to appear for a scheduled setting in their cases until after May 8.
The courthouse will not close down entirely. Special case settings arranged by the parties, emergency hearings, mental health and related hearings, protective order cases, and non-contested docket settings and appearances for in-jail cases will continue.
