The state’s top criminal court refused an appeal Wednesday from Meechaiel Criner, who is serving a life sentence for capital murder in the 2016 death of University of Texas student Haruka Weiser.
Following common practice, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals did not comment on its decision. The court has discretion over which appeals it will hear.
Criner had challenged a November ruling by the Austin-based 3rd Court of Appeals, which rejected arguments that jurors should not have been shown evidence collected from a trash can, including clothes resembling those worn by Weiser, a sweater with a receipt bearing the victim’s name and clothing that appeared to match what Criner was wearing on campus surveillance footage.
The 3rd Court also rejected Criner’s claims that mandatory life sentences for juveniles are unconstitutional and that his trial judge should have granted his motion for a new trial.
