Village of The Hills Mayor Eric Ovlen resigned from the City Council on Tuesday. The announcement came at a council meeting almost four years to the day he was appointed to the position following the resignation of former Mayor Ron Dodd.
Council Member George Spencer was appointed to fill Ovlen’s place on the dais until Ovlen’s term expires in October, with five-year resident Rodney Thompson appointed to fill Spencer’s council term that ends in October 2021. Hilda Potsavich will continue as the Village’s mayor pro tem and serves the community’s leadership along with Treasurer Jim Nelson, Secretary Robert Smith and Council Member Zachary Carroll.
According to a news release, Ovlen and his family will be relocating outside of the Village. Although they purchased a home in the community in March 2011, the Ovlens didn’t move there permanently until October 2012. Ovlen previously served as chair of the municipality’s Park Commission.
“Eric Ovlen has played a significant role in leading the Village of The Hills city government through a period of major change and growth that included the hiring of a professional city manager, Wendy Smith,” the release stated.
Last year, the Village’s City Council was recognized for its outstanding contributions to local government in Texas, and the Texas City Management Association named the community Council of the Year, noting its decision-making skills, professional management and ethical practices, the release stated.
Under Ovlen’s leadership, the City Council developed various infrastructure projects, approved an ethics ordinance and passed a Capital Improvement Plan as well as enhanced the Village’s City Park, developed a community walking trail system and established a Youth Advisory Board.
