Double File Trail Elementary School students showed Round Rock leaders they can learn a lot from today’s youth at the school’s fifth annual “Leadership Day” event Friday.

City Council members Hilda Montgomery and Will Peckham, school board Trustee Cory Vessa and Police Chief Allen Banks attended the event where students get an opportunity to interact with local leaders.

“These are your role models,” Claudio Cruz, a former school board member and school volunteer, told students as they led a pep rally to kick off the event. “One of these days you guys are going to take their place. That’s the beauty of it.”

The theme for this year’s event, “The habits are sweet!” highlighted the self-help book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen Covey. The longtime best-selling book focuses on habits that lead to a flourishing life, including being proactive, beginning with the end in mind and seeking “first to understand, then to be understood.”

Following the pep rally, students gave local leaders and parents a tour of their classrooms to share their latest work, goals, classroom jobs and how they model the seven habits in their daily lives.

Students in fifth grade math teacher Michelle Small’s class showed Montgomery and Peckham their digital data notebooks, where they keep a list of goals and test scores on science, math or reading to keep track of their work.

Small said being able to share her students’ hard work is one of her favorite parts about the event.

“The kids get to showcase what they’re really good at,” Small said. “I have kids who are really good at math, reading or computers, and they really step up to the plate.”

Montgomery and Peckham said they were very impressed by the students’ work and how the leadership skills they’ve learned are used inside their classrooms on a daily basis.

“They inspire kids and more importantly they inspire us to see what these kids can do,” Montgomery said about the event. “I think it’s fabulous.”

“The leadership that they’re learning is going to make our community better for the future,” Peckham added. “That’s all you can have.”
