I have plans to give Lake Travis bass a history lesson this spring.

I was organizing tackle boxes in my man cave this week when I discovered a box chock full of my very favorite soft plastic lure of the 1980s. For over 10 years, it was my go-to best producer in the spring.

I’m talking about the Lunker City Slug-Go. This injured bait fish twitch bait had an erratic darting action when rigged weightless on a Texas rigged style single worm hook.

A Fishing Facts magazine article introduced me to this amazing fish fooler around 1982.

Tournament bass anglers in the northeast had been keeping it a secret for years. I ordered a bunch because my intuition told me a clear lake like Travis would be ideal for this finesse lure.

The Slug-Go worked great for all my clients regardless of skill level. My first guide trip produced over 40 black bass in four hours. All sizes of bass from 1to 4 pounds could not resist the slow fall and darting action when the rod tip was popped every ten seconds or so.

Bass would not let it go and were very easy to hook using light 6- to 8-pound line on spinning or spincast rigs.

Shorlines are teeming with active bass from March through May. These shallow bass can be hard to fool in our clear water with most lures. The 4- and 6-inch Slug-Gos were attacked with abandon. Within 30 seconds, a fish usually ran off with this dying minnow imitation.

By the mid 90s, new lures seduced me and most anglers, especially the Senko. Today’s bass have never seen the enticing Slug-Go, and I’ll bet they will love it.

Stay turned for a field test report next week.
