Travis County sheriff’s Deputy Robert “Drew” Small died late Friday night when his motorcycle collided with another vehicle in Milam County, according to the sheriff’s office on Saturday.
Small, 48, was off duty at the time and returning home from Louisiana, according to the sheriff’s office. The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the collision.
Small had been with the Travis County sheriff’s office since December 1995. He worked in dispatch and as a corrections officer before becoming a deputy in 2006, working night shift patrol in western Travis County for more than a decade before moving the motors unit in December 2018, according to the sheriff’s office.
According to a news release from the sheriff’s office, Small’s employee file “is stacked with letters of appreciation and commendation from the community. He recently received a Unit Citation for his work with the Special Response Team.”
