Travis County health officials on Monday said 157 more people in the area tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, bringing the total confirmed cases in the county during the pandemic to 34,769.

Health authorities did not report any new coronavirus-related deaths on Monday, and the county’s pandemic death toll remained at 466. The most recent fatality occurred over the weekend.

Austin health authorities last week said the number of active cases in the county was the highest it had been since mid-August. The county’s number of active cases hit 1,975 on Monday.

Of the 182 people in the hospital Monday with the coronavirus, 64 were in intensive care and 32 were on ventilators. The county reported 25 new hospital admissions for COVID-19 on Monday.

The seven-day rolling average of new hospitalizations, which has been gradually rising since the start of the month, was 30.3 on Monday. The last time that the rolling average was above 30 in the Austin area was on Aug. 17, according to local health officials.

The record for the highest seven-day average number of new hospitalizations for the Austin-Travis County area stands at 75.1, reported on July 8.

The seven-day rolling average of new hospital admissions is one of the main factors health officials look at when considering coronavirus-related restrictions in the city.

Austin health officials on Monday also announced that it had put together a team of local health care and community partners to help with future COVID-19 vaccination plans for the area.

Last week, interim Austin-Travis County Health Authority Dr. Mark Escott again warned residents against holiday gatherings, pointing to steadily rising number of cases and hospitalizations in recent weeks.

He had said he is considering recommending that Travis County go back to Stage 4 of Austin Public Health’s risk-based guidelines this week if the situation did not improve.

Of those who have tested positive for the coronavirus in the pandemic, 48% were Hispanic, according to recent Austin data. Non-Hispanic whites made up about 33% of cases, 7% are Black and 3% are Asian.

According to the 2019 census estimates, the county is about 49% non-Hispanic white, 9% Black, 7.4% Asian, and 33.6% of the population is Hispanic.
