A 41-year-old man was arrested over the weekend after police accused him of shooting another man to death at a homeless camp in Sunset Valley.

Damon Richard Boyd was charged with first-degree murder Sunday in the shooting death of 29-year-old Shawn Thomas Eaton, an arrest affidavit said.

Police said witnesses living at the homeless camp, near the northbound service road in the 5900 block of South MoPac Boulevard (Loop 1), told officers that Eaton had gotten into an argument with Boyd. A witness said he heard Boyd tell Eaton to “get out,” but Eaton said “no” before Boyd shot Eaton.

According to the affidavit, the shooting had occurred on Friday, but Eaton’s body was still at the campsite when officers were flagged down on Sunday, the affidavit said. Police said they found Eaton’s body with what appeared to be a single gunshot wound to the chest.

Boyd was in the Travis County Jail on Monday with bail set at $500,000.

The investigation is ongoing and police are asking anyone with video or information about the case to call Crime Stoppers at 512-974-8477 or email detectives at homicide.apd@austintexas.gov. Tipsters may remain anonymous.
