accepting applications

The Austin/Travis and Williamson Counties Emergency Food and Shelter Program Board is accepting applications from agencies in Travis and Williamson counties that are interested in receiving funding.

Applications are due March 16. Applicant agencies must be nonprofit, faith-based or governmental and have provided eligible services to southern border migrants released from the Department of Homeland Security custody on or after Jan. 1, 2019, through Jan. 31, 2020.

The four service categories of eligible expenditures are primary, secondary, administrative and equipment and assets. Information, instructions and the application are available at efsp.unitedway.org by clicking the Supplemental Funding Info tab.

WEST AUSTIN

Get Your Rear in Gear

takes place Saturday

Nearly 1,000 participants are expected to attend the 13th annual Get Your Rear in Gear 5K Run/Walk in Austin on Feb. 29 to benefit patients of People’s Community Clinic for a FIT program grant to help fund and screen low-income Central Texans who are at a high risk for colon cancer.

Austin activities will begin at 9 a.m. at Camp Mabry, 2200 W. 35th St., with guest speakers, followed by the Kids’ Fun Run for children 12 and younger. The 5K Run and Walk will follow at 9:15 a.m.

Registration and more event information is available at ColonCancerCoalition.org/Austin. Race day registration will be available.

Mental health

workshop Thursday

NAMI Central Texas, the local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, will offer a free 90-minute workshop for people who have loved ones with a mental health diagnosis.

The training will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Bastrop Christian Outreach Center, 1096 Texas 71.

The workshop will teach participants about diagnoses, treatment, recovery, communication strategies, crisis preparation and resources.
