New lures and techniques are constantly being introduced to tempt bass anglers. Some have proven their value, others not so much.

I’ve always loved to experiment and show something new to Lake Travis bass. It keeps me excited to change up the menu and observe how the fish react.

Small modifications to existing lures often make a difference. I have recently developed a lot of confidence in a new treble hook.

The VMC Bladed Hybrid treble hook sports a small willow leaf blade that adds extra flash to crankbaits, topwaters and jerkbaits.

Recently, several clients and I have boated several black bass using this hook. VMC claims it is the tweak that makes fish freak.

You can add it to the rear hook position or the belly section. Both ways have worked well.

The extra weight of the blade transforms your crankbaits into suspending models, instead of floating upward on the pause. Bass often prefer this presentation.

Another effective change is to insert a small nail weight into the head of a Senko style worm. Then Texas rig as usual from the tail end.

This modification causes the Senko to fall away from you on a slack line. This backward glide is great for probing under boat docks and drawing reflex strikes from following bass not used to seeing a lure challenge them in the face.

The backward gliding Senko is great for meandering back under any overhanging trees or lay downs. Just remember to give the lure a lot of slack line and watch your line closely where it enters the water. Any tick or subtle movement is your signal to set the hook.

March will mark the beginning of improved shallow water fishing.
