Austin this week could face the strongest cold front so far this season, according to the National Weather Service, but is it time to break out the cardigan? Here are five things worth knowing about this week’s weather:

1. Cold front in the wee hours: The timing is always subject to change, but forecasters’ best guess is to expect a blustery cold front to bring chillier air and plenty of rain starting after 1 a.m. Thursday.

2. Temps as low as 65: With north winds on Thursday kicking up to 15 mph, including gusts as strong as 20 mph, the overcast skies will keep temperatures no warmer than 75, forecasters say. Nighttime temperatures could sink to as low as 65 degrees amid gusty northwest winds.

3. Rain and isolated storms: Forecasters expect only scattered thunderstorms with the cold front.

“The main threat continues to be heavy rains and flooding … as well as training of cells,” the weather service said in a bulletin Tuesday. “Training” refers to how a series of storm cells can pass over the same spot, like a line of train cars at a railroad crossing.

“This threat will be along and west of the (Interstate 35) corridor,” the weather service said. “Rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches can be expected across most areas along and west of I-35.”

With Central Texas soil still saturated from last week’s downpour, forecasters warn of the possibility of minor flooding from runoff and swollen streams and creeks.

4. Soggy September so far: Nature normally takes all 30 days of September to generate 2.99 inches of rain in Austin. But this year, the city’s main weather station at Camp Mabry got 3.07 inches of rain in the month’s first week. Austin’s rain gauges stayed mostly dry over the summer, but rainfall has already started to pick up. Last week’s rain pushed the city’s annual rainfall total to 27 inches, or about 4 inches higher than normal for this time of year.

5. More rain expected Sunday: Rain chances remain in the forecast on Friday and Saturday, but sunshine is likely to dominate and push temperatures back into the upper 80s, forecasters say. But Sunday and Monday in Austin have a 50% chance of thunderstorms with daytime temperatures reaching a muggy 88 degrees.
