TRAVIS COUNTY

City offers relief funds

to individuals in need

The city of Austin is offering $10 million in Relief in a State of Emergency funds to individuals in Austin and Travis County through RISE 2.0.

While the original RISE funds were distributed to social services agencies, RISE 2.0 funds will be distributed directly to individuals who apply and are chosen through a randomized selection process. Chosen applicants will receive $2,000 per household.

RISE 2.0 funds come after the original $15 million of RISE funds were awarded to 20 nonprofits and social services agencies in May and June. Most of the funds distributed to the original 20 agencies have been exhausted.

Those eligible must be at or below 200% of the federal poverty level, a resident of Austin or Travis County, ages 18 or older, experiencing hardship due to COVID-19 and have not received other financial assistance in the past 30 days.

Applications will be available starting Sept. 14 by calling the phone bank at 512-714-6950 or by visiting fund.uptogether.org/rise2. Applications must be submitted by 7 p.m. Sept. 21.

GEORGETOWN

Some I-35 lanes closed

at night through Thursday

Lane closures on Interstate 35 will be in effect just north of Williams Drive in the overnight hours through Thursday, weather permitting.

Closure of one northbound main lane and two southbound main lanes on I-35 will be in effect from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. The closure is to allow construction work on the center support structure for the Northwest Boulevard bridge project.

The bridge will be a new east-west connection over the interstate and an alternative to Williams Drive. The project connects Rivery Boulevard to the west and FM 971 to the east and is scheduled to be complete in early 2021.

CENTRAL TEXAS

ACC campuses use

100% renewable energy

Two Austin Community College campuses — the ACC Round Rock and Elgin campuses — now use 100% clean, renewable electricity making ACC the first community college district in Texas to switch over some of its campuses entirely to wind and solar power.

ACC launched the 100% renewable energy program with the Texas general land office. The college is looking to expand the program to all of its campuses to implement 100% renewable energy districtwide.

Other green initiatives at the college district include rooftop solar panels at eight campuses, rainwater/air conditioner condensation reclamation, alternative transportation programs, a utility tracking system, waste diversion with zero-waste events and sustainable purchasing.
