ROUND ROCK Two Round Rock restaurants failed their health inspections in January, including one that had to be closed temporarily, according to reports from the Williamson County and Cities Health District.

Both restaurants are currently open.

The two failing restaurants were Chennai Cafe at 3203 Interstate 35 South and Pita Haus at 4401 Interstate 35 North, according to the district.

Managers at both restaurants did not respond to requests for comments.

A restaurant fails a health inspection if it receives a score of 30 points or more. Each infraction is scored differently.

The first failed inspection includes a follow-up by the county health district that restaurants either pass or fail. Any restaurants that have failed an inspection twice within 12 months are forced to close for two days and pay a fine.

Chennai Cafe failed its inspection on Jan. 7 by getting a score of 40, its report said. It was forced to close temporarily because it was the restaurant‘s second failure in 12 months, the district report said.

Its violations included an employee not washing hands or putting on gloves before handling ready-to-eat food, and an employee rinsing hands in stagnant water, the report said.

The inspector also found multiple containers of moldy produce in a cooler, a hand sink by a dish area without soap or towels, utensils stored in dirty water, and floors, wall and ceilings with an “accumulation of grease and food debris.”

Pita Haus failed an inspection Jan. 2 with a score of 36, its report said.

Its violations included an employee who washed hands in soap containing dead insects and a person in charge who did not stop food preparation after being told there was no soap provided at a back sink for employees to wash their hands.

Other violations included rusted and flaking shelves in the refrigeration and raw beef not being kept at a cold enough temperature.
