AUSTIN (KXAN) — A woman was charged with first-degree murder Thursday after her cousin died following complications from a gunshot wound, according to the Austin Police Department.
APD said on June 21, 2024, officers responded to the 6000 block of South First Street at approximately 6:15 a.m. for reports of a disturbance from neighbors.
About 15 minutes later, 9-1-1 received another call from 34-year-old Irean Demuchest, who said her cousin killed herself.
When officers arrived, they found 31-year-old Samantha Demuchest on the floor in a bedroom with an apparent gunshot wound.
“Samantha was able to tell officers that Irean had shot her and was then transported to a local hospital,” APD said.
According to police, an investigation showed Irean shot Samantha in the apartment and then tried to make it look like Samantha shot herself.
Initially, Irean was arrested and charged with first-degree aggravated assault/family violence with serious bodily injury.
APD said Samantha lived as a paraplegic until her death on Nov. 12. APD said Samantha’s autopsy results showed she died as a result of complications of a gunshot wound to the neck, and the manner of death was ruled as a homicide.
