HAYS COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) – To ensure it continues to meet the need of a growing county, the Hays County Food Bank has expanded its operations.
The Central Texas Food Bank reported in February that about one in six people living in the county are food insecure – not having consistent access to enough food to live a healthy lifestyle. Though the food insecurity rate in Hays County is slightly lower than Central Texas as a whole – 15.9% and 16.4%, respectively – Hays County has a higher poverty rate and more households without vehicles compared to Central Texas.
“Hays County Food Bank is proud to announce its move to a new, expanded location at 1612 S IH 35, San Marcos, TX, marking a major step forward in the fight against food insecurity in Hays. The relocation from the previous address at 220 Herndon Street allows the food bank to increase the impact its food assistance can have in the community,” read a press release related to the move.
In the new facility, which officially opens on Wednesday, the organization can expand staff operations, client services and food storage, according to the release.
The Hays County Food Bank said the expansion will allow them to execute the county’s first “Client Choice Market,” which allows its clients to peruse food as they would in a grocery store.
“We couldn’t be happier to bring this change to San Marcos,” said Lisa Young, Executive Director of Hays County Food Bank. “With more space and the launch of the Client Choice Market, we’re putting dignity and personal agency at the center of hunger relief in Hays County.”
