WCRAS said more than 90% of the dogs and cats that entered the shelter last year were saved.

According to the shelter, a 90% save rate is the nationally recognized benchmark to be considered “no-kill.” The standard factors in the approximate 10% of pets who have “medical or behavioral circumstances that warrant humane euthanasia rather than killing for lack of space.”

WCRAS serves lost and unhoused animals of Round Rock, Cedar Park, Leander, Hutto, Georgetown and Williamson County.

“Maintaining a 90% or greater save rate is more than just a milestone — it’s a promise to every dog and cat who comes through our doors that they will be given every opportunity to find a loving new home,” said Misty Valenta, director of Animal Services. “This achievement reflects the compassion and dedication of our community, volunteers, fosters, adopters and staff who work together every day to save lives.

“But this is not a one-time accomplishment; it’s a commitment we must uphold year after year. Continued community support is essential to ensure we can keep saying ‘yes’ to pets in need, providing the care, resources, and second chances they deserve,” Valenta said.

Best Friends Animal Society, a national animal welfare organization, recognized WCRAS’ achievement as one that can be replicated by other shelters in Central Texas.
