AUSTIN (KXAN) — Construction near Interstate 35 is not a new sight, but what is the purpose of the giant holes being built along the corridor?
According to the Texas Department of Transportation, the holes are part of a new system of drainage tunnels and a pump station meant to improve stormwater management along I-35. As part of the construction project, I-35 will be “reconstructed and lowered,” TxDOT said.
The access shafts would be added along the interstate for maintenance and operational access to the new infrastructure.
TxDOT said construction began in mid-2025 and is anticipated to be completed in 2029.
“Crews anticipate working in these areas during the day, at night and on the weekends,” TxDOT said. “This reduces the project schedule to a shorter duration, while nighttime work allows for fewer daytime traffic impacts.”
