AUSTIN (KXAN) — The votes are in, and projected winners have been declared in most local races across Central Texas. A handful of races, though, will advance to runoff elections after no single candidate managed to receive a majority of the votes.
In some municipalities, a candidate must receive 50% of the vote — plus one — to win. If no candidate reaches that threshold, the election goes to a runoff between the top two candidates. In this case, the runoff election will be held Saturday, Dec. 13.
Here’s a look at the six local races advancing to a runoff.
Buda City Council District C
Kimberly Goodman and Jeffrey Morales both received about 43% of the vote in Tuesday’s election and will advance to a runoff. Emily Jones was in a distant third place, with about 14% of the vote.
Goodman came closest to an outright victory, but was 75 votes short of the threshold needed to avoid a runoff.
Kyle Mayor
Robert Rizo and Yvonne Flores-Cale will advance to a runoff. Rizo received 42% of the vote Tuesday night, while Flores-Cale received 32%. Donny Wills and Andrea Villescaz were in a distant third and fourth place.
Rizo came closest to an outright victory, but was 422 votes short of the threshold needed to avoid a runoff.
Kyle City Council District 1
Incumbent Bear Heiser will advance to a runoff with challenger Courtney Goza. Heiser received about 40% of the vote Tuesday, while Goza received 27%. Kyle LeVell was close behind at 23%, while Ellen Ermiss was in a distant fourth place.
Heiser came closest to an outright victory, but was 546 votes short of the threshold needed to avoid a runoff.
Leander City Council Place 3
Natomi Blair and Anna Yelaun will move ahead to a runoff in this race. Blair received about 47% of the vote on Tuesday night, while Yelaun picked up 40%. Mohan Marchetty was in a distant third place, with about 12% of the vote.
Blair came closest to an outright victory, but was 200 votes short of the threshold needed to avoid a runoff.
Pflugerville Mayor
Doug Weiss and Pat McCord will advance to a runoff. Weiss received 47% of the vote, while McCord won about 35%. Gregory Harrington and Andy Lindsey were in a distant third and fourth place.
Weiss came closest to an outright victory, but was 246 votes short of the threshold needed to avoid a runoff.
San Marcos City Council Place 2
Josh Paselk and incumbent Saul Gonzales will advance to a runoff. Paselk received 35% of the vote, while Gonzales won 27%. Barbara Montana-Escobar was close behind at 26%, and Christopher Polanco and Brandon Oles were in a distant fourth and fifth place.
Paselk came closest to an outright victory, but was 1,107 votes short of the threshold needed to avoid a runoff.
