AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Airport Advisory Commission received an update Wednesday on progress in the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport’s Journey With AUS program.
That program is a decade-long overhaul of the city’s airport, designed to increase capacity and account for additional services and passengers traveling through the Texas capital. Design work is ongoing for some of the larger components of the program, while the West Gate expansion, West Infill and TSA Checkpoint 3 expansion, the midfield taxiways and the Yellow Garage are currently in the “build” phase.
Here’s a breakdown of the latest project statuses within the program.
West Infill and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Checkpoint 3 expansion
This project is designed to add more square footage to the terminal and house the new outbound baggage handling system, while also expanding the third TSA checkpoint. Officials said crews are installing the curtain wall as well as hangars and supports for some of the mechanical and electrical components related to the project, while exterior waterproofing is almost complete. Construction on the project began in early 2024 and is expected to wrap in early 2026.
West Gate expansion
This expansion is poised to add 84,500 square feet across three levels, replacing 12 of the current gate boarding bridges and creating three additional gates “to offset gate closures during future expansion projects,” per Journey With AUS details.
Current installations include exterior framing and roof decking on the low roofs, while fireproofing has been completed on the ramp level. The Gate 28 passenger boarding bridge has been returned to service, while replacement of the Gate 24 passenger boarding bridge is in progress.
Work began in mid-2023 and is set to run through early 2026, based on current timelines.
Midfield taxiways
Alongside the future addition of a new, 20-plus gate concourse, AUS will build two new concrete parallel midfield taxiways, or paths that allow aircrafts to connect between the runway, terminal and other airfield facilities.
Crews are removing utility and placing new utility as part of this project, and construction submittals review efforts are ongoing. The subcontractor contract execution related to the project has been completed.
The project’s construction timeline is set to run from late last year through mid-2027, per commission documents.
Yellow Garage
AUS held a groundbreaking for the future Yellow Garage on Feb. 28. That facility is designed to hold 7,000 parking spots and will replace the Red Garage, which officials plan to demolish as part of the expansion program.
Final tweaks on the project’s design are set to wrap later this year, while the construction of the project is anticipated to run through early 2028.
Projects in development
The building portion of AUS’ atrium infill project is expected to begin in the second quarter of this year and continue through the third quarter of 2026. Design work on the project began in mid-2024 and is set to wrap in the middle of this year. The project is intended to add more square footage to the terminal for security screenings, bag checks and passenger processing.
Both the Concourse B and tunnel project as well as the arrivals and departures hall project are in the design phase. The Concourse B and tunnel project will add a new 20-gate midfield concourse, with a tunnel connecting it to the Barbara Jordan Terminal. The arrivals and departures hall project will add expanded ticketing and check-in areas, security checkpoints, tenant and concession spaces and baggage claim areas.
Design work on the Concourse B and tunnel project is expected to run through 2026, with a construction timeline running from 2026 to 2030. On the arrivals and departures hall’s front, design work is running this year through 2026, with a construction period also running from 2026 to 2030.
